3 tips for staying sun safe this summer

While many countries around the world envy Australia for its temperate climate, year round sunshine and relaxed outdoor lifestyle, all that sun and surf does come with a downside.

Australia has an extremely high rate of skin cancer compared with other countries and this is a major cause for concern. According to the Cancer Council Australia, skin cancers account for around 80% of newly diagnosed cancers with melanoma diagnoses increasing by around 60% between 1982 and 2010.

With summer already on us, now is a good time to refresh your memory when it comes to sun safety. Knowing how to protect yourself and your family from the sun can help you ward off early skin damage that can lead to more serious problems.

Here are three of our tips for staying safe when the mercury is rising:

1. Cover up

Protecting your skin against the sun is your best defence against damage. Wear loose fitting clothing to stay cool, and keep as much of your body covered as you can. Whenever you are out in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat to reduce the amount of exposure to your face and neck.

2. Apply sunscreen

The regular application of sunscreen is essential during the summer months. For effective protection, you should apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, a minimum of 20 minutes before you go outside and every two hours thereafter. Many people don’t use enough sunscreen so don’t be afraid to apply it generously – apply an amount the size of a 10 cent piece to your ears, neck and face and double that for each arm and leg.

3. Take extra care in the water

When you get wet, or even if you sweat a lot, your sunscreen may not work as effectively. Make sure whatever sunscreen you use is water resistant and re-apply it whenever you have been in the water.

As long as you take the right precautions, you can make the most of summer and enjoy your time outdoors while minimising the risk of UV related health problems.
